Chullpas are funerary towers in which the Kolla people buried their nobles. It was a warrior people that settled near Lake Titicaca between 1200 and 1450.
The funeral procedure was very careful: first they mummified the deceased and then they introduced him into the chullpa through an opening that faced east and through which only one person could fit. Finally, they placed the mummy in the fetal position along with valuable objects.
The construction of the chullpas is very curious. It is amazing how they managed to make totally cylindrical towers using such large rocks.
